This large rectangular box depicts a 1616 Map of the Americas by the famous British mapmaker, John Speed.

This map put England in the mainstream of mapmaking and is one of the most decorative and interesting maps of the Americas from the 17th century,

In it, California was depicted as an island, a mistake that influenced many later maps based on Speed’s.  The box interior is trimmed in navy blue linen book cloth.  The box sides and front display the fanciful portraits of native peoples of the Americas as they were imagined by mapmakers at the time.

Dimensions of the box are approximately 11″ long by 9″ wide by 3 1/4″ deep.
